Valley Girl DocumentaryLegendary musician Frank Zappa always had a taste for bringing absurdity to the forefront. In 1982, he released "Valley Girl" on his own Barking Pumpkins label as a satire of California's shopping mall culture, which he saw becoming a trend that he felt would follow for years... as it did. The recording reached #32 in the Billboard Hot 100, and featured his then 14-year-old daughter, Moon Unit.
There's no explanation that could account for Frank Zappa's names for his children; Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmed Emuukha and Diva Muffin. By all reports, Zappa didn't try to explain, insisting that his kids would always have more trouble because of their last name, and simply said he gave them those names "because I wanted to." Moon Zappa went on to have a prolific and widespread career in film, television, additional recordings and as an author. She married Matchbox Twenty drummer and guitarist Paul Doucette in 2002, and they have one child, Mathilda Plum Doucette, born December 21, 2004. This video is a fascinating mini-documentary and behind the scenes look at what made "Valley Girl" the icon for such "Valspeak" terms as "grody to the max", along with popularizing such surfer terms as "tubular" and "gnarly", among others. |

Zappa was a musical genius and even wrote classical orchestral pieces. He recorded an album of five these in about 1975 called "Frank Zappa Orchestral Favorites" that's quite amazing. He died way too soon in 1993 of prostate cancer.
Great post, and fascinating look at his creative process.
